The Golden Globes are known for giving a boost for the Oscar contenders and also predicting who will win the awards come Oscar day.
This year, the Globes surprised with many unexpected actors taking home awards. Jennifer Lawrence who won for her role in "American Hustle" defeated Lupita Nyong'o for "12 Years a Slave" for the Best Supporting Actress award. While it seems unlikely for Lawrence to win the Oscar two years in a row, a Globe win has now positioned her as the front-runner to win.
Leonardo DiCaprio who missed out on the Screen Actors Guild Nominations beat out favorite Bruce Dern for his role in "The Wolf of Wall Street." The actor has been nominated for the BAFTA and with the Globe win, DiCaprio could be on the road to winning his first Oscar.
Meanwhile, Amy Adams defeated Meryl Streep for the Best Actress Musical/Comedy award. Adams' performance for "American Hustle" was expected to lose but with her win, Adams looks to get nominated for the Oscar over Streep.
Alfonso Cuaron also got a boost for the Academy Awards as he beat favorite Steve McQueen. The "Gravity" director is unlikely to win the Oscar as the Academy has failed to award special effects driven films over the past years (except "Life of Pi"). However, if the Academy feels like surprising, then Cuaron will win the Oscar.
Cate Blanchett continued her front-runner position as she won the Best Actress Drama award for her role in "Blue Jasmine." The actress will most likely repeat the win at the Academy Awards.
Another surprise was Matthew McConaughey who defeated Chiwetel Ejiofor for Best Actor. The "Dallas Buyers Club" actor could now win the Oscar. However, with DiCaprio having surprised, the race has come down to the two actors.
Meanwhile, "12 Years a Slave" reclaimed the front-runner position having won the Best Picture Drama award. The movie still has a long way to go especially after having lost six of the seven categories it was nominated for. In order for "12 Years a Slave" win the Oscar it will have to win the three guilds it is nominated for. Without those wins, the film could go home empty-handed on Oscar Sunday.
