A 70-year-old man that was reported missing was found alive by the police on Jan. 7 in Ontario, Canada after being trapped in his truck by snow for over 24 hours.

According to CTV News, John Friesen, a resident of Leamington, in Canada's Great Lakes region on the border with the U.S., was reported by his family as missing on the afternoon of Jan. 6 after they noticed he didn't come back home after leaving in his white pick-up truck.

The cold winds that have hit Canada this winter have been so strong that this winter is considered to be one of the worst in Canada's history, a fact that only increased the Friesen family's worries with each passing minute.

After a thorough search, police units managed to locate the 70-year-old's truck buried under a snow mound close to the highway leading to the coast. According to Canadian newspaper The National Post, police officers said they were able to identify the truck since it still its tail-lights were still on.

The 70-year-old man spent over 24 hours trapped under a snow mound at sub-zero temperatures. The National Post notes that a police report indicated that the man was found conscious inside his truck; however, parts of his body had begun to freeze, and if he was found later, he would have died.

"All I could see was the red light of tail-light. You hope for the best, but you're prepared for the worst," Sergeant Shawn Diewold told The Windsor Star.

Friesen was taken to the hospital where he is reportedly in stable condition.
