According to Air Traffic Management, 2013 was the "safest year in commercial aviation."
The online resource also revealed that "worldwide fatal accidents involving large commercial air transport aircraft were lower in 2013 than any other year in the last decade, with 17 accidents, compared with a yearly average of 27."
While this news is definitely reassuring, flight phobics may need a little bit more convincing that it's okay to fly the next time they travel. Perhaps this new report from AirlineRatings.com can do just that.
CNN noted that the airline safety and product rating site has released a list of the top 10 safest carriers among the 448 it monitors for the year 2013.
On top of the heap is Qantas, which has been given a full seven stars by the website. The Australian airline "has a fatality free record in the jet era (since 1951)."
Flight-phobes, you now know which airline to pick for your first flying experience.
The other honorees, which also garnered seven stars for safety and in-flight product, are Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Eva Air, Royal Jordanian, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.
The airlines with the lowest ranks are One Star, Kam Air, Scat, and Bluewing Airlines. This makes you wonder what "one star" exactly means. CNN conjectured that it's "perhaps just getting off the ground."
AirlineRatings.com included various factors "related to audits from aviation's governing bodies and lead associations as well as government audits and the airline's fatality record" in its rating system. In-flight entertainment, food, and seating are also looked into.
The review site also revealed that out of the 448 carriers they have surveyed, 137 achieved a seven-star rating. Only 50 got three stars or less. In addition, the website also declared that airlines which have completed the audit "have a 77% better safety record" than those which have not been evaluated.
