The Best Picture Drama is one of the most competitive group of nominees this year. The films represent a wide range of topics. Four out of the five films are based on real life events while one is a completely original screenplay. However, one film stands out as the favorite to win the award.
"12 Years a Slave" - Ever since Steve McQueen's film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival it has been called the best film of the year. The movie has already won 21 precursor awards including the Boston Film Critics and Washington Film Critics. The movie has scored rave reviews and is currently the best reviewed film of year. With seven nominations at the Golden Globes, it is likely the film that will sweep the race.
"Captain Phillips" - Director Paul Greengrass' latest had a slow precursor start as it lost a number of critics groups and was not nominated for a number of Best Picture awards. The Globes have embraced the film with four nominations but it is not a front-runner in any of the categories. While it could win the Best Picture of the year, Greengrass is expected to go home empty-handed.
"Gravity" - Alfonso Cuaron's feature is probably the biggest threat to "12 Years a Slave." Having already won three awards including the Los Angeles Film critics, the movie's critical acclaim and popularity are important factors. The Globes are famous for having given "Avatar" Best Film over "The Hurt Locker." A similar case could happen if the Globes embrace the four-time nominee.
"Philomena" - Stephen Frear's latest film is a surprise in the category as the film has failed to get nominations for Best Picture. However, after having obtained a BAFTA nomination, the movie could easily surprise. With three nominations, it is one of the least nominated films and therefore it is unlikely to win the award.
"Rush" - Ron Howard's film is the surprise of the season having obtained two nominations. The movie had failed to garner any critic's nominations and failed to win a single Best Picture nomination. The film has no buzz going for it and the fact that it failed to get directing and screenplay nominations only shows the weakness of the movie in the race. As a result, don't expect a single win for "Rush."
Predictions: McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" has all the momentum going for it. However, if the Hollywood Foreign Press find it too dark, "Gravity" will win the Best Picture award.
