The phenomenon of the polar vortex has put one of the iconic tourist spots in the world on ice. In a report from MSN, the Niagara falls was frozen over because of record breaking cold enveloping North America.
Last Tuesday was the record lowest temperature ever felt in the Niagara area, as temperatures fell to negative two degrees farenheit. According to a report in the Daily Mail, the combined windchill effect made the area feel like it was -20 degrees farenheit.
CBS News reported that this icing of Niagara falls happens each year and in reality, the famed tourist spot is not frozen over as claimed by other news outlets. In its statement, the news firm said, "The falls are partially covered in ice, which happens every year. In fact, some of the photographs gaining popularity online, like this one, are not even from 2014."
This was seconded by The Atlantic, who called out Reuters by saying, "And crucially, Reuters filed these photographs at 10:48pm, many hours after the first 2011 photograph started to spread. It is only a slight stretch to say, Reuters filed after people needed a photograph of Niagara Falls frozen over. So many people wanting such a photo in their timelines practically wills them into existence."
It added that the freezing is only partial and the falls are still flowing its course in all the other pictures. Furthermore, the falls freeze over every winter.
The Huffington Post also reported that the area is currently celebrating its Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights. This event makes the cold its palate and the waterfall becomes painted with colored lights to turn it into a winter paradise. This is done each night until the end of January 2014.
