Jerry Seinfeld Criticizes 'Man of Steel' for Action & Lack of Character Development

Jerry Seinfeld has expressed his disappointment with Zach Snyder's latest Superman movie "Man of Steel."

"I was so happy that they made another Superman movie!" Seinfeld said, according to IGN. "I'm really reluctant to be critical of it in any way. But I thought the glossing over of the figuring out a secret identity and why he felt he needed one was a huge missed opportunity for that character, and one of the most interesting things about Superman is the whole secret identity. So to me it was too much action / violence and not enough character study."

The critique is an interesting one, especially when one considers that Clarke Kent (Superman) takes on his secret identity as a reporter at the very end of the new film.

However, the film was blasted for its excessive violence; the final hour of the movie was essentially one action sequence after another. Many also complained about the constant destruction of skyscrapers that likely increased the death toll in the movie astronomically; that concept is never actually explored in the aftermath of the battle. Finally, many critics admonished the film for making Superman murder General Zod in the climactic moments of the battle.

The film actually wound up with a 55 percent approval score on aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes; the website's critical consensus claims that "'Man of Steel' provides exhilarating action and spectacle to overcome its detours into generic blockbuster territory."

A sequel for the film is due out in 2015 and features Ben Affleck as Batman.
