Authorities of the government of Mexico City presented a gigantic Rosca de Reyes (a traditional sweet bread) that was shared by thousands of people according to Mexican newspaper Milenio.

This bread is enjoyed by Mexicans on January 6th to celebrate, according to Catholic beliefs, the visit that the Three Wise Men paid to baby Jesus days after He was born in the city of Bethlehem.

Each Rosca de Reyes has a couple of plastic or porcelain dolls representing baby Jesus hidden inside it.

As it happens every year, the monumental rosca is shared with the people who visit the Zócalo, or main square, of the Mexican capital and this year it managed to gather thousands of visitors that received a portion of the 400-meters-long bread.

The Chief of Government of the Federal District, Miguel Ángel Mancera and the Minister of Social Development, Icela Rodríguez Vázquez made the first cut to the gigantic rosca at 9 a.m. to begin the celebration.

To make the monumental rosca, organizers hired 2,000 artisans and bakers who were in charge of mixing the ingredients, baking the bread and decorating it with traditional Mexican sweets and dried fruits in yellow, green and red colors.

The bakers used two tons of sugar, two tons of margarine, 800 kilos of butter, 5 tons of flour, 360 eggs, 500 kilos of powdered sugar, 900 kilos of yeast and a gallon of orange essence according to Mexican newspaper Excélsior.

To decorate it, artisans placed 300 kilos of ate candy, 500 kilos of jelly and 150 kilos of figs on the rosca.

The finished bread had a weight of 9 tons and was cut into 200,000 pieces which were given to people along with a small carton of milk to enjoy.

The Plaza de la Constitución was watched by hundreds of police officers who ensured everyone acted in an orderly fashion to get their piece of rosca.
