"Frozen" won the box office beating out new release "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones."
The Disney flick made $20 million easily beating out every film currently in theaters. The animated movie has now made $297 million falling short of the $300 million mark. The film became the fourth-highest grossing movie of 2013 and should continue to generate buzz throughout January.
In second place, "The Marked Ones" scored $18 million in 2,867 theaters. The opening was the worst opening for a "Paranormal Activity" film since the original installment, which was first unveiled in 12 theaters. "The Marked Ones" has a hard road ahead of it especially because Horror movies are generally strongest during their opening weekends.
In third place, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" made $16.million and brought its total to $229 million. The movie is currently on track to become the only Lord of the Rings film to not make $300 million.
In fourth place, "The Wolf of Wall Street" had a strong hold and made $13.4 million. The movie has already grossed $63 million and is now looking like it can easily pass the $100 million mark. With the Golden Globes and Oscar nominations coming up soon, word of mouth and interest should increase.
"American Hustle" landed at number five with $13.2 million as well. The movie has already scored $88 million and is likely to surpass the $100 million by the end of next week.
"Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" came in at number six with $11 million. The movie has now made $109 million and should end its run with $140 million.
Interest continued wane for "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" as it scored $8 million. The movie has only made a disappointing $45 million. Expect the big budget film to close in on $75 million by the end of its run.
