On Jan. 7 the Directors Guild of America will release the nominations for Best Director.
The organization is known for narrowing down the five directors who could be potentially nominated for the Academy Award.
At the moment, three directors are considered locks for the award: David O. Russell for "American Hustle," Alfonso Cuaron for "Gravity" and Steve McQueen for "12 Years a Slave."
The last two slots could be taken up by up to five potential directors. These include Paul Greengrass for "Captain Phillips" and Spike Jonze for "Her." Both directors were nominated for the Critics Choice awards and Greengrass was nominated for the Golden Globe. As a result, Greengrass is most likely a lock.
Alexander Payne is increasingly becoming a favorite of the Guilds and Academy. "Nebraska" has had a huge presence with precursors and could potentially become one of the big surprises of the season.
Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" has surprised with two guilds scoring nominations at the Writers Guild and Producers Guild. The film is building momentum and Scorsese has been a favorite of the DGA for years, getting seven nominations.
The final directors are Joel and Ethan Coen for "Inside Llewyn Davis." However, they are unlikely to receive a nomination especially after having been shut out of the PGA, SAG and WGA awards. The guilds usually follow each other and this year will not be an exception.
Other possible contenders are Woody Allen for "Blue Jasmine," Stephen Frears for "Philomena" and Jean-Marc Valle for "Dallas Buyers Club."
