Today, two U.S. government employees were shot south of Mexico City when the armored U.S. Embassy vehicle they were riding in was sprayed with bullets. The concentration of bullet holes around the passenger-side window brings forth the possibility that skilled gunmen were responsible. The employees were heading towards Cuernavaca when they were attacked on a highway.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities. One of the victims was shot in the stomach and hand while the other received a bullet to the leg. Fox News Latino reports that both are hospitalized and in stable condition.

Three Mexican Marines were also wounded in the shooting. A Mexican navy captain was in the vehicle with the U.S. government employees, but did not sustain any injuries.

A federal police patrol vehicle arrived at the scene of the crime after the incident occurred. According to a Mexican army official, "the SUV with diplomatic plates was found after a report about the shootout on the two-lane highway.

The location of the shooting is notorious as a hotspot for drug gang, criminal, and rebel activity.

This is the third attack on diplomatic personnel in two years. In 2010, a drug-gang shooting killed a U.S. consulate employee along, her husband, and another man in Ciudad Juarez. In 2011, another drug-gang shooting claimed the life of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Northern Mexico.

The U.S. Embassy made no comment on the matter.

The motivation behind the shooting is unknown, along with the agency that the U.S. government employees belong to.
