The Metropolitan Opera has announced a concert entitled "Russian Exoticism: From Folk Music to 'Prince Igor.'" The concert will be headlined by Soprano Anna Netrebko, Bass Ildar Abdrazakov, bass Stefan Kocan and Mezz-Soprano Anita Rachvelishvili.
The concert is the Met's latest attempt at reaching a younger crowd and will take place at the Greenwich Village hotspot Le Poisson Rouge on Jan. 15.
According to the New York Times the "concert is actually a promotional trailer, of sorts, for the Met's new production of Borodin's "Prince Igor."
The concert is the fourth collaboration between the Met and Le Poisson Rouge. The first three were more in the house style, with an emphasis on contemporary works. The first concert happened in October 2012 when the composer Thomas Adès played music from "The Tempest" at the club. Earlier in May, composer Nico Muhly was featured in promoting his first opera "Two Boys." Later in October, the Met presented a programming featuring music by Mr. Muhly and Benjamin Britten.
Netrebko recently made her role debut as Leonora in "Il Trovatore" in Berlin. She returns to the Metropolitan opera for Adina in L'Elisir d'Amore.
Abdrazakov next performs Borodin's "Prince Igor," Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffman," and Verdi's "Macbeth." Rachvelishvili recently performed Amneris in Verdi's "Aida," and Carmen in Bizet's "Carmen." Kocan was last seen at the Met in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" and Verdi's "Rigoletto."
The Metropolitan Opera will perform "Prince Igor" for the first time in nearly 100 years. The new production will be directed by Dimitri Tcherniakov and will open on Feb. 6.
