Sofia Vergara, the Emmy-nominated actress featured in ABC's six-time Emmy award winning comedy "Modern Family" recently tweeted a photo of herself in which she appears almost identical to Lucille Ball. "Lucyyyyy I'm hooome," the Colombian-born bombshell wrote alongside the pic, which was taken for an upcoming "Modern Family" Season Four episode, according to her representative.
"I never thought I could make money and support my family by being funny," Vergara admitted to the Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview.
She obviously underestimated herself by a long shot, as Vergara, who plays Gloria Delgado-Prachett in "Modern Family" keeps viewers in hysterics with her over-the-top antics. The actress won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress and was also nominated for an Emmy for her work on the show, which will begin its new season Wednesday September 26th at 9:00PM.
Vergara has a lot of new things going on in her life as of late. Aside from getting engaged to fiancé Nick Loeb in July, she also recently became the face of Cover Girl cosmetics and has just launched an exclusive line of clothing and accessories for K-Mart.
"When I decide to do anything, like Covergirl or Kmart or Pepsi, it has to be something I believe in, something that I know about, something that I can talk about," Vergara said in her Hollywood Reporter interview. "I just don't want to do it for the money. It has to be something that is part of my life."
Born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia with her parents and five siblings, Vergara went on to study pre-Dentistry at Colombia University. That is, until she was discovered by a photographer on a beach at age 23 and her runway model career took off. Her fame increased exponentially upon moving to America and becoming a household name in Hollywood.
Among her accomplishments as an actress, Vergara has been featured in several films including "Happy Feet 2," "The Smurfs," "Four Brothers," "Lords of Dogtown," "Meet the Browns," and "Madea Goes to Jail." In terms of television accomplishments, aside from "Modern Family," she has played roles in "Hot Properties," "Entourage," and "The Knights of Prosperities." She also executive produced the Spanish version of "Desperate Housewives."
Vergara has overcome tremendous adversity on her way to celebrity superstardom. After getting married in 1991 to her now ex-husband Joe Gonzalez with whom she had a child in 1992, she wound up divorcing Gonzalez in 1993. A few years later, in 1998 her brother was killed in a botched kidnapping attempt. After that tragedy she brought her son, mother and sister to live with her in the U.S. Following the move, in 2000 Vergara was diagnosed with thyroid cancer - however she received treatment and is now fully recovered. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her son Manolo.
