"Star Trek 3" is slated for a 2016 release, but the film does not yet have a director.
According to Trek Mate, Joe Cornish was originally rumored to be in talks to helm the film, but has since abandoned the proposition.
"There is currently no timeline for the third film, but Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are hoping to release it in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of 'Star Trek,'" said a press statement according to Trek Mate.
That timetable may be difficult to meet if a director is not brought on soon to replace J.J. Abrams; the director is currently working on the other major galactic epic "Star Wars: Episode VII."
Despite the lack of a director, actor Anton Yelchin is confident that the brains behind the operation will make it work out well in the end.
"I mean, whoever they choose I'll be excited to work with. I trust the people involved and trust that they want what's best for the film," said Yelchin, according to Collider. "I'm sure they'll find someone talented. If it's not Joe Cornish, who's very talented, it'll be someone else. I think everyone's very smart. Everyone at Bad Robot, J.J. and Bryan Burk are all very, very smart people. So they'll do what needs to be done for the film and I'll be excited to find out what that is."
The 2009 reboot of "Star Trek" grossed over $257 million while the follow-up, "Star Trek Into Darkness," managed to gross $228 million.
