The leader of the PEMEX Workers Union, Carlos Romero Deschamps and the former leader of the National Education Workers Union (SENTE) head the list of the 10 most corrupt people in Mexico, according to Forbes.
After Transparency International ranked Mexico as most corrupt country in Latin America, and in the 106th position out of 177 countries, Forbes released a list of the ten most corrupt people in the North American country.
On the first place of the infamous list is the former union leader Elba Esther Gordillo, who was accused in February of embezzling other 200 million dollars belonging to the National Education Workers Union, with which she led a life of luxury.
"She is known for her $5,000 Hermes handbags and expensive plastic surgeries in California clinics. Three houses linked to Gordillo have been found in California. The main one, where the teacher spends most of her time under house arrest is worth 4.7 million dollars", said Forbes journalist Dolia Estevez in the article which can be read on the magazine's website.
In second place is another union leader, but this one belonging to the Union of Oil Workers of the Mexican Republic, the also Senator Carlos Romero Deschamps, who is said to be a controversial, opaque figure, and has generated much controversy due to the luxuries he and his family boast.
According to Mexican magazine Proceso, Deschamps' son, José Carlos Romero Durán, is the owner of two apartments in Miami Beach worth 7 million 550 thousand dollars, while his daughter, Paulina Romero, boasts on her Facebook account about her travels around the world in private jets, luxury yachts and dinners at expensive restaurants.
Besides union leaders, Forbes ranks the brother of former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Raúl Salinas, in third place, "considered to be a symbol of corruption and impunity", who remained in prison for 10 years, accused of homicide and was finally set free in 2005.
The list is completed by former Secretary of Public Safety Genaro García Luna; the former governor of Tabasco Andrés Granier; the former governor of Tamaulipas Tomás Yarrington; the former governor of Coahuila Humberto Moreira; the former governor of Mexico State Arturo Montiel; PRI member Fidel Herrera and the former spokesperson for former President Felipe Calderón, Alejandra Sota.
