The Kansas City Film Critics have voted "12 Years a Slave" as the Best Film of the Year.
The movie also took the Best Actor award for Chiwetel Ejiofor, Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o and Best Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley. Michael Fassbender won his first prize for Best Supporting Actor and Steve McQueen split the award for Best Director with Alfonso Cuaron for "Gravity."
"Gravity" also took home an award for Best Actress for Sandra Bullock.
The critics' circle also saw another tie for Animated film. Both "Frozen" and "Despicable Me 2" shared the award.
"Her" took two awards for Best Original Screenplay and the Vince Koehler Award for Best Fantasy, Sci-Fi or Horror.
Meanwhile, "The Act of Killing" garnered the Best Documentary award and the Palm d'Or winner "Blue is the Warmest Color" won the Best Foreign Film.
The Kansas City Film Critics are the not most reliable Oscar predictors as they have failed to award a Best Picture in the past four years. Previous winners include "The Master," "The Descendants," "The Social Network" and "Up in the Air." The last time the Kansas critics awarded a Best Picture winner was in in 2008 when "Slumdog Millionaire" won.
The Kansas City Film Critics is a group of film critics who review current motion pictures on a regular basis. Dr. James Loutzenhiser, who passed away in November 2001, founded the circle in 1966. As a result, the annual film awards are now called the Loutzenhiser awards.
