Felipe Viveros García, one of the most wanted drug traffickers in Mexico, was arrested by the Federal Police in the company of two of his main accomplices.
The criminals were captured in Jalisco thanks to the operations carried out by the police throughout the Mexican state and in coordination with the General Attorney, reported EFE.
Froylán Barrera Morales and José Bernabé López Alcaraz were detained along with Felipe Viveros after being linked to crimes of kidnapping, extortion, murder, drug trafficking and possession of firearms.
Bernabé and Barrera provided security for other criminals, managed communications equipment and kept an eye on the police to warn their fellow criminals.
They carried out dozens of kidnappings, according to authorities, keeping their victims isolated in security houses throughout Jalisco.
"They were subjected to long periods of captivity in camps turned into safe houses," said the National Security Commission.
Viveros was accused of over 200 murders of people involved in drug trafficking, kidnapped victims, and other criminals he considered to be his enemies. There is also evidence linking him directly to 10 kidnappings, according to The Associated Press.
The drug trafficker carried out his illegal activities in the states of Jalisco and Guerrero, the same area in which the so-called "Knights Templar" cartel has fought the "New Generation" cartel over territory, which has left dozens dead.
Authorities said that Viveros also extorted and bribed politicians in Guerrero and Jalisco, which allowed him to continue his work unchecked.
He was captured with the cooperation of both states, which have been affected by warring cartels.
