James McAvoy and Bryan Singer are reportedly set to return to work on "X-Men: Apocalypse."
The actor and director have worked on each of the two "prequel" films in the franchise and are looking to make a return for the third installment, which is due out in 2016.
"I only heard about it this morning," said McAvoy, according to the Independent. "What's great is that even though it's a sequel, even though it's a franchise, I keep getting to reinvent Charles Xavier and that's amazing."
Meanwhile, Singer tweeted "#Xmen #Apocalypse 2016!" on his account, leading to suspicion that he is in fact returning to direct the film.
Rumors indicate that villain Apocalypse will make an appearance in the third film in the new X-Men trilogy.
Singer directed the original X-Men film back in 2001 and was also around for the sequel. He skipped out on the critically-panned "X-Men: The Last Stand" and was also not the director for the "prequel," "X-Men: First Class," which was directed by Matthew Vaughn.
Singer is currently helming "X-Men: Days of Future Past," which is slated for a May 23, 2014 release date. That film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin, Peter Dinklage, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Shawn Ashmore and Patrick Stewart among others.
The move tells the story of the X-Men team fighting a common enemy in two different time periods. The film's script was written by Simon Kinberg and was produced by Singer, Hutch Parker, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Kinberg.
