This holiday season is not only for merrymaking but also for a much-needed staycation or movie marathon. Ah, the joys of watching all those flicks 'til your eyes drop (or droop)!
But when you're watching these films we've compiled for our Christmas movie-watching list, your eyes may not drop, droop, or remain dry-eyed for very long.
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Rotten Tomatoes has rated this Shane Black-directed production 88.7%, with critics agreeing that this "tongue-in-cheek satire blends well with entertaining action and spot-on performances in this dark, eclectic neo-noir homage." This choice is perfect for the holidaymaker with a yen for some action and not a small dose of crime and comedy. It stars Val Kilmer, Robert Downey, Jr. and Michelle Monaghan.
Love Actually
Thanks to this 9-stories-in-one movie, you don't need to pop in 10 romantic comedies for Christmas just to get your fix of romance, drama, and humor. There's everything for everyone in this Richard Curtis film, including a roster of stars that include Keira Knightley, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, and even Mr. Bean star, Rowan Atkinson.
Elf
Mark Hughes of Forbes heaps generous praise on this comic flick, saying, it's "one of the best Christmas movies... of all time." He continues to gush: "It's such a perfect mix of the more eccentric humor that Will Ferrell is famous for as well as classic comedy sensibilities for viewers of all ages. And the storytelling is just perfect, as are the character arcs, something the film doesn't get nearly enough credit for. There's so much real heart and humanity in this film."
It's A Wonderful Life
Frank Capra's film is not "one of the most loved films in American cinema" for no reason. It continues to be so even decades after its 1946 release. Just watch and learn.
A Christmas Story
This funny film especially resonates with those with semi-dysfunctional family experiences and awkward growing-up years. It's a Christmas classic that bears repeating and guffawing over this holiday season!
The Nightmare before Christmas
Want to see something quirky, original, and unconventional for Christmas? Tim Burton's stop-motion production, directed by Harry Selick, is your best choice. Watch how Jack Skellington transforms Halloween into Christmas (and seeming to end up giving the opposite effect).
A Christmas Carol
The cinematic version of the Charles Dickens classic tale about Christmas needs no introduction. Perfect for literary fans.
