For the third time in Saturday Night Live history, Paul Rudd hosted the show with sensations from the music biz for his guests. The first time, it was Beyonce; second, Paul McCartney; and this time, it was One Direction.
In an article by Daily Mail UK, Rudd was reported to have started his hosting stint by pointing out that his past musical guests both overshadowed him in the show, to which 19-year-old Harry Styles assured him, "Don't worry Paul, we're not here to outshine you."
Niall Horan added, "Yeah, you do the comedy stuff and we'll stand back and blow kisses."
The episode, according to Time, was a delightful combination of Rudd and the boy band hotties. In one sketch, Rudd played a dedicated grown man who camped out with tween girls waiting for the 1D boys to emerge after a concert.
Rudd seemed to be a big 1D fan, as he boasted with a lot of trivia about the boys in one of the best sketches of the night. The same article from Time commented, "Oh, Paul Rudd. We know you're a great actor and everything, but the passion for One Direction just didn't feel like acting. It felt real."
According to Rollingstone Magazine, in order not to be outshined by the young men of 1D, Rudd bought with him his co-stars from "Anchorman 2," Will Ferrell. David Koechner, and Steve Carell. The group then proceeded on to singing an a cappela version of "Afternoon Delight."
Said LA Times, "The harmonies were pretty, but ultimately this was just a promo for "Anchorman" instead of really using all the comedy genius that was onstage."In the same article, the article also pointed out that "the monologue wasn't as much of a hit as it should have been considering the star potential."
