With the one year anniversary of Jenni Rivera's death coming up, Latin Americans have begun speculating about Rivera potentially getting nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in "Filly Brown."
Ever since the movie was released in April, actor Edward James Olmos began campaigning for the actress, stating that Rivera deserved an Oscar. He said that the movie is incredibly dramatic and was surprised Rivera could pull off such a feat.
However, with Academy Award campaigning having begun, Indomina who distributed "Filly Brown," has not submitted the film to any awards circuits. The film was notably absent from the Indie Spirit Awards and Gotham awards. Additionally, no formal campaign has begun.
While Rivera is still a long-shot to receive a Best Supporting Actress nomination, talk about Rivera's one year anniversary could potentially bring her performance back into the foreground.
Posthumous Academy buzz is not something rare in the entertainment business. Heath Ledger famously won the Oscar for his role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight" and this year James Gandolfini is receiving buzz for his role in "Enough Said."
Additionally, Rivera received critical raves for her performance in "Filly Brown." Amy Nicholson from the LA Times wrote: "It's a haunting, unglamorous performance, and when the prison guards take her away, we wish she could stay longer."
"Filly Brown" tells the story of a promising rapper from Los Angeles who finds herself in a gray area when a record producer offers her a compromising shot at stardom. The movie was released in April and later launched on DVD in July.
The Academy Award nominations are slated to be announced on Jan. 16 with the awards ceremony being held on March 2.
