The 18th annual Satellite Awards have announced their nominations with "12 Years A Slave" leading the nominees.
The Steve McQueen film garnered 10 nominations including the Best Picture, Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, Best Supporting Actor for Michael Fassbender, Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o, and Best Screenplay for John Ridley. The film was also nominated for Best Score, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design.
"American Hustle" and "Gravity" obtained the second-most nominations. "Hustle" received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Meanwhile, "Gravity" obtained nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress.
One of the biggest surprises was "Rush," which received nominations for Best Picture and Best Director as well as five other technical awards. The film, however, failed to receive a Best Supporting Actor or a Screenplay nod. "Rush" is currently seen as a long-shot for an Oscar nomination but early nominations like this one may boost the film's awards possibilities.
Other Best Picture nominations include "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Saving Mr. Banks," "Blue Jasmine," "Captain Phillips," "Philomena" and "The Wolf of Wall Street."
The awards also surprised in a number of categories. Ryan Gosling garnered a Best Supporting Actor nominations for his role in "The Place Beyond the Pines" while Casey Affleck also received a nod in the category for his role in "Out of the Furnace." "Blue Is the Warmest Color" actresses Lea Seydou, and Adele Exarchoupoulos were also nominated.
A number of Satellite winners have went on to win or get nominated for Oscars including "Argo," "The Descendants," "The Social Network" and "The Hurt Locker."
The Satellite Awards are run by International Press Academy, which is an association of entertainment journalists. The awards will be handed out on March 9, 2014.
