Magnolia has acquired North American Distribution rights to James McAvoy's new film "Filth."
The company's president Eamonn Bowles announced the news in a press release. "Very funny and deeply disturbing in all the right ways, 'Filth' is a wild ride, driven by a performance for the ages from James McAvoy. 'Filth' is going to join the ranks of 'Trainspotting' as a cult classic," wrote Bowles.
The new movie, which also stars Jaime Bell, Imogen Poots, Edie Marson and Jim Broadbent, tells the story of a bipolar, junkie cop who manipulates and hallucinates his way through the festive season in a bid to secure promotion and win back his wife and daughter. Jon S. Baird adapted the Irvine Welsh novel and directed the film.
"Filth" recently opened in the U.K. to favorable reviews with critics praising McAvoy for his performance. Kate Muir from Times UK wrote, "James McAvoy gives his best performance to date as a morally and physically decaying detective in this hallucinogenic adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel."
The film has already been nominated for several awards in U.K. It was nominated for Best Director, Best Actor for McAvoy, Best Supporting Actress for Shirley Hendersen and Best Supporting Actor for Edie Marson at the British Independent Film Awards.
McAvoy is best known for his work in "X-Men: First Class," "Atonement" "The Last King of Scotland" and "The Last Station." He was last seen in Danny Boyle's "Trance" with Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel.
Magnolia will release "Filth" in 2014.
