Disney has announced that it will release "Alice in Wonderland 2" in 2016.
The studio has announced that the sequel to the 2010 release will go ahead as planned. The studio also announced that Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska will return for the sequel.
It was also announced that Tim Burton, the first film's original director, will not return to direct the sequel and will be replaced by James Bobin, who co-created "Flight of the Conchords" and directed 2011's "The Muppets." The script will be written Linda Woolverton who wrote the first film as well as "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King." No plot details have been revealed.
Disney has set a Memorial Day 2016 release for "Alice 2," making it the first movie to schedule a spot during the weekend. The only film already set for May 2016 is an untitled Disney/Marvel release.
The 2010 original also starred Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway and became a box office hit making $1 billion worldwide. However, it received mixed reviews.
The studio also announced that the live-action adaptation of "The Jungle Book" will be released on Oct. 9, 2015. The film will be directed by "Iron Man" filmmaker Jon Favreau, while Justin Marks will be adapting the film. However, no details have been revealed.
Disney has been adapting several classic animated movies to live-action films lately. This year, Sam Raimi directed "Oz: The Great and Powerful," which was a prequel to the 1939 classic "The Wizard of Oz." Disney is also currently working on a remake of "Cinderella," which is slated to star Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter and Lily James, and will release "Maleficent" in 2014.
