"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" scored the No. 1 spot at the North American Box Office this weekend.
The sequel to the original scored the fourth-highest opening of all time with $161 million. The opening was behind "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," which opened to $169 million. "Catching Fire" will continue at the number one spot throughout the week and should be at $200 million by the end of the week. Additionally, the Thanksgiving weekend should help the film.
The opening of "Catching Fire" affected the holdover films. "Thor: The Dark World" landed the No. 2 spot making $14 million, down 61 percwnt from last weekend. The film is still on track to make $200 million, but may be affected by the opening of Disney's "Frozen" as well during Thanksgiving.
At No. 3, "The Best Man Holiday" continued its success with an intake of $12.5 million, bringing its total gross to $50 million. The movie is now slated to end its run with $75-80 million.
At No. 4, the new release "Delivery Man," starring Vince Vaughn, failed to capture the box office and only made $8 million. The film is the second Vaughn movie this year to fail. Earlier in 2013, "The Internship" only made $44 million with studios hoping to bank on the star's successes in "Couples Retreat," "Four Christmases" and "Wedding Crashers."
Disney also opened "Frozen" in one theater and made $238,000 for an explosive start. Oscar-contender "Philomena" opened in four theaters to a solid $133,700. Both films open nationwide on Wednesday.
