Serafín Zamaba, son of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, one of the most wanted in Mexico was arrested on Thursday, November 21 in Nogales, Arizona, by DEA agents.
According to Mexican magazine Proceso, Serafín Zambada was arrested shortly after 5 p.m. on Thursday along with his wife Yameli Torres at the Concini border crossing in Nogales, as he attempted to enter the US.
After his arrest, the son of one of the 10 most wanted men in Mexico was sent to a medium-security prison in Tucson and was later presented to court. His wife was set free, according to American authorities.
The first reports released by the DEA confirm that Serafín Zambada faces drug trafficking charges at a federal court in southern California, reported newspaper Vanguardia.
The same newspaper highlights that in 2010, Vicente Zambada Niebla, Serafín's brother, pleaded not guilty to the crime of drug trafficking, and said that he had acted with the approval of the DEA, which unleashed a scandal over the alleged links between DEA agents and organized crime in Mexico.
Vicente Zambada was arrested in Mexico City in 2009 and was extradited to the United States in 2010. At the time of writing, there is no confirmed date to begin the trial against the drug trafficker.
According to Proceso, the arrest of one of the sons of "Mayo" Zambada had been kept a secret by American authorities; however, his file was declassified on Thursday and it's been confirmed there will be a closed audience next Monday, November 25 at 10:30 a.m. Tucson time.
Serafín Zambada became notorious for the pictures he would upload to his Twitter account, in which he boasted a life full of luxuries. He could be seen with gold-plated firearms, exotic animals and large amounts of drugs.
