Apple Inc. may be losing some momentum when it comes to the worldwide smartphone sales as new data showed the Cupertino-based organization lost percentage points in the latest market share figures.
According to Gartner, Apple sold 30.3 million iPhone units during the third quarter of 2013, which is an increase from the estimated 24.6 million units from the same period in 2012.

Despite the increase of iPhones sold globally, Apple's market share in the smartphone market slipped 2.2 percentage points. During the third quarter of 2012, Apple represented 14.3 percent of the smartphone sales market share but fell to 12.1 percent during the same quarter this year.
"While the arrival of the new iPhones 5s and 5c had a positive impact on overall sales, such impact could have been greater had they not started shipping late in the quarter," Gartner's principal research analyst Anshul Gupta said. "While we saw some inventory built up for the iPhone 5c, there was good demand for iPhone 5s with stock out in many markets."
Samsung encountered an odd situation with the figures provided by Gartner. For the third quarter this year, Samsung sold approximately 80.4 million units, which is a vast increase from the 55.1 million sold during the third quarter in 2012. Despite the increase in smartphone sales, Samsung did not see its market share percentage shift. For the third quarter of 2012 and 2013, Samsung has maintained its 32.1 percent market share.
A reason for Samsung maintaining its market share percentage may have come from Lenovo, LG Electronics and Huawei experiencing an increase in their respective market share percentages.
While Samsung and Apple held first and second place, respectively, Lenovo increased its ranks from fifth to third place. Lenovo previously accounted for 4.1 percent of the market share. By the time the third quarter of 2013 ended, Lenovo garnered 5.1 percent of the market share.
LG Electronics technically tied Lenovo for the same market share percentage during the third quarter of 2012 with 4.1 percent, however, the company sold slightly more smartphone units. LG Electronics increased its market share to 4.8 percent.
Huawei rounded up the top five with an increase of 0.2 percentage points between the third quarter of 2012 and 2013. Huawei garnered 4.7 percent of the market share for the third quarter this year.
