Illinois state authorities warned immigrants about possible cons when trying to obtain a driver's license.
Some people are taking advantage of immigrants after a new law was passed that would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain a temporary driver's license in Illinois.
According to news agency Associated Press, Lisa Madigan, the General Attorney of Illinois, identified certain driving schools clandestinely offering driver's licenses to immigrants and conning them by asking for almost a thousand dollars for one.
Besides this, immigrants are encouraged to pay hundreds of dollars to accelerate the process. Madigan asked that immigrants be informed so they don't fall in the hands of conmen since the only way to get a temporary driver's license is through the Department of State of Illinois.
Any facility belonging to the Department of State can support immigrants who wish to obtain a temporary permit which has also been approved in other states.
The licenses provided by Illinois authorities are only valid in that state, while conmen are offering "universal licenses" which they say are valid anywhere in the United States.
As a requisite, Illinois authorities perform a vision and driving test to authorize licenses. Those interested must make a single $30 payment, be residents of Illinois for at least a year and provide an ID with name, date of birth and signature.
According to testimonials shared by Univisión, the process is simple and quick for immigrants.
Each driver's license will be mailed to the address provided by the applicant. Madigan explained that the Department of State will carry out the process with an appointment, and that immigrants can get information during the process in Korean, Spanish, Chinese and Polish.
