Authorities in New York are investigating the stabbing of infamous former mob boss John “Junior” Gotti at a Long Island CVS on Sunday night. According to police, Gotti claimed to be acting as a good samaritan by trying to break up a fight between two people when he was stabbed.
A spokesperson for Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice told reporters that police and DA investigators were working together in a joint probe of the incident.
“We are investigating, along with the Nassau Police Department, a stabbing that occurred in Syosset, New York on Sunday evening involving John ‘Junior’ Gotti,” communications director Shams Tarek said.
Police said the 49-year-old man reported being stabbed in the abdomen in the CVS parking lot in Syosset at 9:45 p.m. on Sunday. According to Newsday, police became involved after receiving a call from North Shore University Hospital.
Gotti reportedly refused to answer any other questions, CNN reported.
No one under the name Gotti was registered in the hospital he was reportedly admitted to on Sunday night. However, according to Newsday, police confirmed that Gotti was in stable condition on Monday.
PIX11 News reported that no surveillance cameras were outside of the CVS, but that investigators were looking at neighboring stores.
Gotti, a notorious Long Island crime boss who acknowledged to being part of the Gambino crime family, pleaded guilty to racketeering, bribery and extortion in 1999. He was sentenced to six years and five months. During his 2009 racketeering trial, Gotti’s case ended in a mistrial when a Manhattan federal jury could not reach a verdict, Newsday reported.
