Is Xabi Alonso leaving the Santiago Bernabeau?
According to reports, the Real Madrid midfielder is potentially headed to Chelsea to reunite with Jose Mourinho. The Spaniard was one of Mourinho's preferred players during the Portuguese's tenure with the Spanish club. Meanwhile, Madrid is reportedly looking for a replacement for the veteran.
"Chelsea are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso after it was revealed that the Bernabeu side have first refusal in pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan according to the Metro," writes Caught Offside.
Alonso recently came off a lengthy injury that made him miss the Confederations Cup with Spain and the start of the 2013-14 season. Since returning, the team has gone undefeated with three straight wins in the Spanish League and a draw against Juventus.
Real Madrid News also reports that Alonso could be tempted to join AC Milan and HITC Sports writes that the midfielder could also make a move to Real Sociedad.
Alonso joined Real Madrid for the 2009-10 season and has been a fixture of the team since. In his inaugural season he started 34 matches for the team and put up three goals and five assists. In the ensuing year he played in 34 games and scored six assists. In 2011-12 he scored one goal and nine assists in 36 matches. Last season Alonso put up five assists in 28 games.
He was also a major part of the World Cup winning team in 2010 as well as the 2012 Euro Champions; he scored two goals in the quarterfinal match with France.
