Eugenio Derbez is rumored to direct the upcoming Jenni Rivera film.
According to Star Media the Rivera family is interested in Derbez especially after the success of "Instructions Not Included," which generated a lot of buzz in the U.S. Rosie Rivera wrote on Twitter, "we haven't spoken. I just think it is a good idea." "Instructions Not Included" made $44 million at the U.S. box office and $85 million worldwide. It became the biggest Spanish language film in the U.S. and the fourth best grossing foreign language film.
The Rivera movie has been in pre-production for a number of months. It was recently confirmed that Chiquis Rivera, daughter of the deceased singer, would play Jenni in the upcoming biopic. The pop star's daughter recently said that she was preparing for the role by taking singing and acting lessons.
The biopic has been in the headlines throughout the year as another film about the singer is being made. The other film is slated to be directed by Francisco Joel Mendoza and has been nicknamed the "unauthorized film."
According to the Rivera family, Mendoza has no right to make the movie and is not legally allowed to use the name Jenni Rivera. However, Mendoza publically attacked the family and showed documentation signed by Jenni Rivera that gave him authorization to make the movie.
Over the past two months very little new information has been released about the film, with many speculating that Mendoza would have it ready for December. However, given the lack of announcements and press, it seems that the movie will be delayed.
