The European Film Awards announced the 2013 nominations with "The Broken Circle Breakdown" leading the nominees.
The Belgium film was nominated for five awards including Best Film, Best European Director for Felix van Groeningen, Best European Actress for Veerle Baetens, Best European Actor for Johan Heldenbergh and Best European Screenplay. The film surprised; it was not expected to get nominated for Best Film. The movie is Belgium's candidate for the Academy Awards and won the Tribeca Film Festival's Best Screenplay and Best Actress awards.
The Palm D'Or winner "Blue is the Warmest Colour" was also nominated for Best Film and Best European Director for Abdellatif Kechiche. However, the film was noticeably absent in the Best European Actress race. Both Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchouplos have been touted as Oscar contenders and have been hailed for their roles.
Meanwhile, Spain's "Blancanieves" was nominated for Best Film and Best European Director for Pablo Berger. The movie has already won the award for Best Costume Design for Paco Delgado.
The Best Film list was rounded out by Italy's "The Best Offer," and "The Great Beauty," and Germany's "Oh Boy!"
Other nominees included Keira Knightley and Jude Law for their roles in "Anna Karenina." The film was also nominated for Best European Screenplay and also won the Best Art Direction award. Naomi Watts was also nominated for the Spanish film "The Impossible."
The awards also inaugurated the category for Best European Comedy in which Pedro Almodovar's "I'm So Excited," and Susanne Bier's "Love is all you Need" were shortlisted.
The European Awards are Europe's equivalent to the Oscars. However, the winner of the awards does not necessarily become a Best Picture Oscar contender. Last year "Amour" won the awards and ultimately got nominated for Best Picture. However, previous winners "Melancholia," "The Ghost Writer" and "Gomorrah" failed to get a single Oscar nomination.
