Marvel has commissioned four superhero live action mini-series for Netflix.
Marvel will be developing a series for Iron Fist, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. As Variety reported, "Disney is opting to team up with Netflix after bringing Marvel properties to TV on ABC. This fall, the Alphabet net debuted 'Marvel's Agents of SHIELD' and ordered full 22-ep season this month after a strong initial showing; however, the show's ratings have fallen in recent weeks."
Disney stated that Netflix has committed to a minimum of four 13-episodes series and a finale event, "The Defenders," which will "reimagine a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters." The new shows will be produced by Marvel television and ABC Television studios.
Alan Fine of Marvel Entertainment stated, "This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel's brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what's sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure."
The appearance of "Daredevil" will be the second in a live action movie or show. In 2003, 20th Century Fox released a film version of "Daredevil," which was panned by the critics and failed at the box office. The other superheroes have never appeared on the big screen or small screen.
The news comes after Netflix's successful shows "House of Cards," and "Orange is the News Black." The digital platform won EMMYs for its shows and is now looking to expand.
Disney and Marvel have become one of the most lucrative companies in the entertainment business with such franchises as "The Avengers," and "Iron Man." The companies will next release "Thor: The Dark World." Next year they will release the second installment to "Captain America," and "Guardians of Galaxy."
