The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the 19 animated films that will compete at this year's Oscars.

The films include three Disney films that were released this year: "Monsters University," "Planes" and "Frozen," which will be released later in November.

Other films include "Cloud with a Chance of Meatballs 2," "The Croods," "Epic" and the critically panned "Free Birds."

Box office hit "Despicable Me 2" will also compete and try to get the nomination the first film failed to earn.

The critically acclaimed "The Wind Rises" was also submitted while the live action film "The Smurfs 2" also qualified.

A couple of films that were submitted still have not had their required Los Angeles qualifying runs. In order for a film to be nominated, the movie must have a one week theatrical qualifying run during the calendar year. If the films do not comply they will be eliminated. These films include "The Fake," "Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie - Rebellion," "Rio: 2096 A Story of Love and Fury," "Khumba,""The Legend of Sarila," "A Letter to Momo" and "Ernest and Celestine"

The films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category will also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories.

Past animated films that have won the Academy Award include "Brave," "Rango," "Toy Story 3," "Up" and "Wall-E." The nominees will be announced on Jan. 16 and the awards will be handed out on March 2.
