The New York Yankees are still projected to retain Robinson Cano, but they are prepared to move on in case a substantial deal cannot be reached.
The New York Post reported that the Yankees will look to sign Detroit Tigers second baseman Omar Infante in case Cano accepts a better offer elsewhere.
"While the Yankees remain the favorites to retain Robinson Cano, they won't be caught short if they need to replace the jewel of the free-agent class. According to industry sources, general manager Brian Cashman has checked on second baseman Omar Infante during the period when teams and players could talk about everything but money," George King III and Ken Davidoff of NY Post reported.
Infante, who batted .318 in 118 games last season, is nowhere near the caliber of the highly-coveted Cano, but the Yankees consider him as the second-best free agent second baseman on the market.
It would also help the Yankees save a lot of money since Infante will not ask for money that is anywhere close to the 10-year deal worth $300 million Cano is reportedly asking from the Yankees.
Meanwhile, free agent catcher Brian McCann expressed interest in signing with the Yankees, who also need to shore up their catchers rotation, which were among the worst hitters during the past MLB season.
In an interview with the New York Daily News, BB Abbott, McCann's agent, said that the Atlanta Braves catcher is considering the Bronx as one of his possible destinations, saying that McCann has a lot of respect for Derek Jeter and the Yankees organization.
"Bronx is certainly a place that is on Brian's radar. How could it not be? You've got an historic franchise and a great park, knowledgeable fans and a chance to win, which is what every guy plays the game for," Abbott said. "From Brian's standpoint, it would be an attractive place to listen to."
Abbott refused to confirm whether or not they have already received a call from the Yankees, saying that multiple teams have already expressed their interests, but clarified that they are also keeping their doors open for a return to Atlanta next season.
