An Ohio man got into the Halloween spirit by using jack-o'-lanterns to create an unique marriage proposal for his girlfriend Wednesday night.

Zach Stoddard of Dayton carved five pumpkins with the words "Will You Marry Me?" and then strategically placed them on the side of a hill during the first night of the annual Stoddard Avenue Pumpkin Glow.  When the illuminated pumpkins were uncovered, he popped the question to his girlfriend of three years, Lauren Brenneman, reports the Associated Press.

Brenneman said "yes" as a large crowd of onlookers assembled at the event gave their approval.

The final night of the glow was on Thursday at dusk on the Stoddard Avenue hill, near the rear of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in the Grafton Hill neighborhood.

Organizers told The Dayton Daily News that this was the first time someone proposed at the annual event, which featured hundreds of carved pumpkins lighting up the night before it ended on Thursday. The pumpkin glow also attracted its largest crowd in 17 years as hundreds filled the hill.

Stoddard told The Dayton Daily News that he worked with Judy Chaffin, the self-proclaimed "Pumpkin Lady" and event organizer to set up the proposal. He said the pumpkin glow on Stoddard Avenue was the ideal spot since his girlfriend loves Halloween and she was born in the month of October.

"Here is Stoddard Avenue and my last name is Stoddard, so I'd figured I try that in. And she is going to be Stoddard," he added.

When asked how she felt about the Halloween proposal, Brenneman said "I'm in shock."
