The Gotham Independent Awards have announced their nominations. "12 Years A Slave" leads the race with three nominations for Best Feature, Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Breakthrough Actor for Lupita Noyng'o.
Another big nominee was "Inside Llewyn Davis," which received two mentions in the Best Feature race and in the Best Actor race for Oscar Issac.
"Fruitvale Station," which won the Sundance Film Festival, received two nominations for Breakthrough Director for Ryan Coogler and Breakthrough Actor for Michael B. Jordan.
As always, the awards organization filled every category with surprises. "12 Years" and "Inside Llewyn Davis" were joined by critical darlings "Before Midnight," "Upstream Color" and "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" in the Best Feature category.
The Best Actress race saw Cate Blanchett get nominated for her role in "Blue Jasmine" continuing the buzz that has surrounded her performance. Brie Larrson also received a nomination for her hailed performance in "Short Term 12." Scarlet Johannson surprised by getting nominated for "Don Jon"; Amy Seimetz was another unique choice for her performance in "Upstream Color"; and Shailene Woodley was also nominated for "The Spectacular Now."
Ejiofor and Issac were accompanied by two Oscar hopefuls Robert Redford ("All is Lost") and Matthew McConaughey ("Dallas Buyers Club"). However, the biggest surprise was Isaiah Washington who was shortlisted for his work in "Blue Caprice."
The Breakthrough Actor category also saw Robin Weigert ("Concussion") and Dane Dehaan ("Kill Your Darlings") get nominated. Kathryn Hahn was the surprise as she was nominated for her work "Afternoon Delight," which received mixed reviews from critics.
The Gotham Independent awards are known as the first precursor to the Oscars and many of the winners have gone on to get nominated for Academy Awards. Past winners include "The Tree of Life," "Beginners," "Moonrise Kingdom" and "The Hurt Locker." The awards ceremony is slated to be held on Dec. 2 and will also honor actor Forest Whitaker and director Richard Linklater.
