Singer and actress Selena Gomez has spoken about the pressure regarding remaining super-sexy in the entertainment industry in order to sell more. While other superstars, including Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, and Rihanna are building around controversy, the 21-year-old Latina artist said she doesn't need any of that in her career.
"Every day I get told I'm not sexy enough or I'm not cool enough or if I did this or if I did that, I would have people love me," said Gomez at a Saturday concert at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut, according to NBC Latino. "Look at this room! I don't have to do any of that to have love!" she said.
The "Stars Dance" singer said the parents of young fans "trust" her for keeping a positive image. During an interview on "The Ben Davis and Kelly K Radio Show," Gomez said she feels her own "rock star" moments are "the PG-13 version." She was also asked whether she would go naked on a music video like her Disney co-star Miley Cyrus did on "Wrecking Ball." "Hey, I don't judge people. But to each their own," replied the Texas native, who earlier this month was denied a Russian visa which forced her to cancel her show in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
Another famous Latina has also addressed the pressure of having the perfect body and image. Jennifer Lopez confessed that she was told to change her body shape early in her career.
"When I first started on television [as a Fly Girl on In Living Color], people, and even my own manager at the time, would tell me I had to make all of these changes," said Lopez, as quoted by NBC Latino. "But you have to stand up and say, 'There's nothing wrong with me or my shape or who I am, you're the one with the problem!'"
"And when you can really believe that, all of a sudden other people start believing too," said the Puerto Rican star.
