Floyd Mayweather Jr. might have recorded two sensational wins against quality opponents this year, but that doesn't mean the Fighter of the Year award is in the bag for him. In fact, there are 11 other boxers that have a legitimate shot at winning boxing's most prestigious year-end award.
Mayweather Jr. already capped his amazing 2013 campaign with a 12-round majority decision win over rated No.1 junior middleweight Saul Canelo Alvarez in their big fight on Sept.14 at MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Dubbed as the greatest fighter in this generation, Mayweather is easily the most bankable athlete this year after collected more than $100 million - including the endorsement deals.
Before his superb performance against Canelo, Grand Rapids native Mayweather also danced his way to a 12-round unanimous decision win over Robert Guerrero to retain the WBC welterweight and claim the Ring Magazine welterweight championship titles.
However, despite a triumphant year for Money May, the Fighter of the Year plum is still very much a toss-up as the year also witnessed the emergence of a few exciting boxers - one of them is Timothy Bradley Jr.
Bradley Unleashes Gladiator Side
Often viewed as purist boxer, Bradley made a bold move this year by taking risky fights against brawler Ruslan Provodnikov and aging but still explosive counterpuncher in Juan Manuel Marquez.
Bradley, in an attempt to prove himself to the public in the aftermath of his controversial 12-round split decision win over Manny Pacquiao last year, engaged in a brutal 12-round slugfest against Provodnikov and went on to salvage a unanimous win despite absorbing heavy blows from the Russian in March.
In his fight against Marquez, Bradley again put himself in another toe-to-toe battle with the Mexican legend through 12 furious rounds. At the end, the Desert Storm took a clear split decision win over Marquez to retain his welterweight belts.
Cream of the Crop
Aside from Mayweather and Bradley, other up-and-coming boxers also made their presence felt this year, including: light heavyweight Sergey Kovalev, junior welterweight Danny Garcia, Mikey Garcia, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Bernard Hopkins, Gennady Golovkin, Adrien Broner, Juan Francisco Estrada, Jhonny Gonzalez, and Adonis Stevenson.
