After German magazine Der Spiegel revealed last week that the National Security Agency (NSA) of the United States had carried out espionage actions against the former President of Mexico, Felipe Calderón, the government of Mexico has condemned said actions and demands and investigation on the matter.
According to information published by Forbes en Español, on Sunday, October 20, the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Mexico expressed in a press release its discontent over the alleged American espionage, and made it clear that it "categorically condemned the violation of the privacy of the communications of Mexican institutions and citizens. This practice is unacceptable, illegitimate and against Mexican Law and International Law".
The press release quoted by Forbes states that in his last meeting with the President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, the President of the United States, Barack Obama, pledged to make an exhaustive investigation that would clear up the matter. Likewise, the Ministry of Foreign Relations highlighted "the importance for the country that said investigation is carried out, which must be completed as soon as possible".
Felipe Calderón Demands An Explanation From The United States Over Espionage Against Him
On his part, the former President of Mexico, Felipe Calderón, expressed his indignation over the alleged spying of his email since 2010, and said that such action is not an abuse against a single person, but an attack on the institutions of his country.
According to newspaper Milenio, Calderón revealed on this Twitter account that he has contacted José Antonio Meade, the Minister of Foreign Relations, to demand an explanation from the United States over the accusations that were revealed last week by Der Spiegel.
According to the German news source, many documents leaked by Edward Snowden reveal an operation carried out by the NSA in which the agency gained access to the email accounts of then-President Felipe Calderón, as well as various members of his cabinet.
Quoted by Milenio, the emails the NSA illegally accessed contained "diplomatic, economic and governmental communications, regarding their political system and internal stability".
Last September, the international scandal regarding the alleged espionage practices of the US government was worsened when documents leaked by Snowden revealed that the NSA had spied on the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff and then-Presidential candidate of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto.
