Briton Amir Khan could give Floyd Mayweather Jr. in serious trouble in a boxing match, but for Kell Brook, his British rival does not deserve a shot against the reigning pound-for-pound king.
Brook was fuming upon learning that Khan is being considered as the next opponent for Mayweather on May 3 next year, saying that Khan has not proven anything yet as a welterweight to deserve a shot against the best fighter in the division.
The 27-year-old Yorkshire native also pointed out that he can't see any reason why Khan is on top of the list of Mayweather's possible opponents, saying that Khan looked like "rubbish" in his previous fight against Julio Diaz on April 7 in Yorkshire. Khan went down in the fourth round of that bout before escaping with a close unanimous decision victory.
"It annoys me when I hear Khan might be fighting Mayweather," Brook said in an interview with Nick Parkinson of Daily Star. "That is because he's not ranked at welterweight, never boxed at welterweight and looked rubbish in his last fight. Khan is not what people make him out to be - and people who know boxing will tell you that."
Brook added that he is annoyed with the fact that Khan will get the big money bout against Mayweather easily, saying that he has worked hard and fought the best fighters in the division, but he has not yet earned a world title shot.
"It's annoying that he could walk right over me and into a big fight like that because it makes business sense. But I've put the hard work in to get into the mandatory position for a shot and I've not been given any shortcuts. I've fought all the people I've been supposed to fight to get me a world title fight and it's been hard work," Brook said.
Brook could earn a world title bout soon, however, as he is scheduled to face Ukrainian Vyacheslav Senchenko in an International Boxing Federation welterweight title elimination match on Saturday at the Motorpoint Arena in Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
