"The Counselor" will be released this weekend, but pundits have been worried about the lack of reviews.
The film, which is being distributed by 20th Century Fox, has generated a lot of buzz throughout the year but the lack of reviews has many worried.
If a studio is hiding reviews of a film the week of its release, there's generally only one reason why—the movie is not very good. This year both "Runner Runner" and "Baggage Claim" were among the films not screened for critics, which ended up receiving terrible reviews.
However, the review situation surrounding "The Counselor" is a bit more complicated considering the movie has already had its London premiere and its U.S. premiere in Los Angeles. Additionally, the film will be premiering at the Morelia Film Festival and Cork Film Festival.
The film is also directed by Ridley Scott who has an incredible track record and was written by respected author Cormac McCarthy ("No Country For Old Men"). It also boasts one of the most impressive casts of the year including Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt. With so much star power, it seems odd that it would be a complete miss.
However, the film once had Oscar buzz, but that quickly dissipated after it failed to premiere at the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals. It is unclear if Fox is planning on surprising audiences and critics by not allowing reviews in an attempt to further stoke anticipation.
"The Counselor" tells the story of a lawyer who finds himself in over his head when he gets involved in the drug trafficking business. The film also stars Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo, Natalie Dormer, Bruno Ganz, Goran Visnjic and Dean Morris and is rated R for grisly images, graphic violence, strong sexual content and language.
