Iker Casillas' future has been a huge question mark in the last few weeks with many wondering if the Real Madrid captain has gotten fed up with his situation at the Santiago Bernabeu. Spanish newspaper Marca recently polled fans about what they thought would happen with Casillas. The responses were quite surprising and potentially alarming for Madrid supporters.
Out of 26,000 readers, most of the Real Madrid fans, approximately 11,000 (45 percent) thought that Casillas would not only leave Madrid, but would wind up playing for the hated rivals in Barcelona. 31 percent felt that Arsenal was a more likely destination while another 10 percent figured that he could head to Manchester City. Others felt that Casillas could wind up playing for Bayern Munich, Monaco, or Juventus.
Munich is unlikely considering the fact that Manuel Neuer has a firm grasp on the starting position and is younger than Casillas. Juventus' goal has belonged to Gianluigi Buffon and it is unlikely that Casillas takes over the net anytime soon. Arsenal and Manchester City have often been cited as popular potential destinations for Casillas.
Barcelona is an interesting proposition for the Spanish keeper. He has been a Madrid product for most of his life and would likely be unwilling to betray the team that made him a national icon. However, Barcelona is looking to replace Victor Valdes and is having a hard time procuring top targets such as Thibaut Courtois and could look to have Casillas in the pipes for the time being. Casillas has a well-documented friendship with Barcelona's Xavi Hernandez and plays with most of the Catalan clubs stars on the Spanish National Team.
Casillas recently hinted that he would be interested in leaving Madrid if he did not get more playing time.
"If a player isn't in the action then he starts to think about making a decision," Casillas said according to Goal.com. "I'm human and I'm a footballer. I haven't played for nine months now and it's the same for me. I'm not a robot.
"Of course I want to stay here and win more titles with Real Madrid. I've been here since I was little, but there will come a day in which I have to take a decision," he added about his future. "As of now my decision is to stay and fight, to struggle and play every day. If I wasn't sure about it I would have told the president I wanted to leave in September.
"That being said, if in three months things haven't changed and you ask me the same question, well maybe I'll be thinking about leaving."
