Barcelona is reportedly interesting in buying defender Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund.
However, the sale seems unlikely according to Borussia CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke. Watzke responded to the rumors by essentially calling this "nonsense."
"That is absolute nonsense," Watzke said according to Goal.com. "This is a complete non-story. There's no truth whatsoever in these rumors."
Rumors over a move for Hummels have been rampant for weeks with Manchester United supposedly looking to buy up the defender for 29.5 million pounds. Barcelona will reportedly match and surpass the offer.
Barcelona is dire need of help on the defensive end of the pitch. While the team still boasts Gerard Pique as its defensive lead, the team lacks any real backup for him. Jordi Alba and Javier Mascherano are both injured while the team no longer knows if Carles Puyol can hold up over a season. Alex Song has often been asked to sit back as a defender, but has been ineffective in the role.
Borussia is one of the top clubs in the world and is a contender to make a deep run in the Champions League this season. It is unlikely that the team will look to sell one of its top players to another team it may have to beat in the Champions League playoffs. Furthermore, Borussia has already lost Mario Goetze and is set to lose Robert Lewandowski to Bayern Munich in January. That reason alone may deter the team from selling Hummels altogether.
Hummels has stated an interest in potentially moving to Barcelona; this could ultimately force the move and hamper Borussia's attempts to keep him.
