'The Legend of Zelda' Movie To Be Interactive?

Is Nintendo planning a Zelda movie?

According to recent comments from Zelda director Eiji Aonuma, a film adaptation of the hit franchise could be in the works.

While talking with Kotaku, the game director noted that the company could consider a film experience that was interactive and in line with the world of the video games.

"This is something that me and Mr. Miyamoto talked about," Aonuma said according to Kotaku. "If we were to make a Zelda title, if we had interest in doing that, I think really what would be most important to us is to be able to play with the format of a movie, make it more interactive, like you're able to take your 3DS into the theater and that leads you into participating in it somehow. We wouldn't want to make it the same as any other movie. We want to somehow change what a movie is."

Disney recently released its classic film "The Little Mermaid" in theaters with second screen interaction. Based on Aonuma's comments, a film version of the movie could follow this same pattern.

While many video game series ("Resident Evil") have embraced cinema, Nintendo's franchises have rarely made appearances on the silver screen. Various attempts to bring "Metroid" to theaters have backfired and a movie based on the "Mario Bros." was met with critical dissent. "Zelda" would pose a greater issue for the franchise as its protagonist Link has been portrayed as a silent character throughout the various games in the series.
