Russia will look to clinch a World Cup finals berth when it takes on Azerbaijan on Tuesday.
The Russians only need one point from their road game against Azerbaijan to book their first World Cup berth since 2002. The Russians enter the match with a record of seven wins and two losses and are the favorite in the game. However, the team knows that Azerbaijan is heavily motivated to win the game despite being eliminated.
Reports indicate that Azerbaijan's soccer federation has promised $127,000 bonuses to each player if the team defeats Russia in front of its home fans on Tuesday.
"Azerbaijan are unbeaten at home in this campaign. They're skilled opponents and are seriously motivated," said Russian midfielder Roman Shirokov, according to Times of India. Azerbaijan did lose against Portugal at home on March 26, 2013. "But we are set to get a win there. We will play not for the bonuses but for our country."
"They're playing their last campaign match at their home ground," Shirokov added. "But we are motivated to win as well. And we all understand the match importance as the pass into the World Cup finals is at stake."
Russia will not need to watch any scoreboards if it manages to get its work done and win or draw. Portugal sits just three points behind and needs a massive win over Luxembourg to have any hopes of topping Group F.
Prediction: Russia draws 0-0.
Start Time: Kick-off starts at 1 p.m. EST
