Timothy Bradley retained his World Boxing Organization welterweight title with a split decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday, but the outcome is being questioned by Marquez and his camp along with his supporters.
Bradley kept his record unblemished after getting the nod from two judges who scored the fight 116-112 and 115-113 in his favor. The other judge scored the bout 115-113 for Marquez, denying the American a convincing unanimous decision victory.
After the bout, Marquez claimed that he did enough to defeat Bradley, while his trainer Nacho Beristain threw verbal jabs to Bradley, saying that the fighter nicknamed "Desert Storm" is lucky for being the only undefeated fighter with two losses - one against Manny Pacquiao and one against Marquez.
The 30-year-old American was clearly the more aggressive fighter, but looked reluctant to engage in a slugfest against the Mexican counter-punching expert. Bradley responded to the tirades thrown against him, saying that he gave the 40-year-old Mexican a boxing lesson, which was enough for him to keep the title.
"That was my ticket to the Boxing Hall of Fame. It's the crowning point of my career so far. Marquez is a great fighter. I beat a great champion. He never touched me. I gave him a boxing lesson. I'll fight anyone, including a bull," Marquez said in an interview with Boxingscene.
Bradley, who scored a controversial split-decision win against former pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao in June 2012, was also asked to compare Pacquiao and Marquez, but the California native just uttered kind words to the both fighters instead.
"Well, they're both big punchers. Marquez dazed me a couple times in the fight. They're both big punchers. One is coming from the left position. One is coming from the right position. I can't really judge who's better or not," Bradley said. "Because, in the Pacquiao fight, my feet were hurt, I couldn't really move like I wanted to in that fight. That being said, both are great champions, both are great warriors, and they're legends in the sport, living legends."
