Convicted murderer Jodi Arias dismissed rumors that her family has made a profit off of her murder trial and media publicity on Thursday and claimed that she is trying to file for bankruptcy.
Arias made the announcement via Twitter writing, "That rumor that somehow my family profited from my trial? Absurd." She also tweeted, "I'm filing for bankruptcy (if I can ever afford to do so)."
She failed to further explain the rumors about her family.
The 33-year-old California native was convicted of first-degree murder on May 8 in the ghastly 2008 death of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander in his suburban Phoenix, Ariz. home. However, the same jury that found her guilty failed to reach a unanimous decision on her sentencing. As a result, a retrial will be held later this year to determine whether she should be sentenced to death, life in prison or life with a chance of release after serving 25 years.
Arias has continued to sell her artwork online. However, she isn't likely to make money since Arizona's "Son of Sam Law" prevents criminals from profiting through book and movie deals.
Later this month, Arias' attorneys will hold a settlement conference with prosecutors on Oct. 24, which may take the death penalty sentence off the table.
During the settlement conference, it is possible that the two sides may reach an agreement to avoid a retrial. If so, then the state will drop its intent to seek the death penalty and Judge Sherry Stephens will decide to either sentence Arias to life in prison without parole or life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
