Sherlock is an elusive being. He’s everywhere. While his character spawned from the mystery novel series, he’s since been seen in movies, cartoons and now television. But mystery buffs and fellow fans don’t seem to mind. No matter where his nonlinear storyline takes him, his followers are with him every step of the way, cheering him on as he takes on London’s greatest villains. Since his origin his cases have become more action oriented and less reliant on deductive reasoning, but that comes naturally as cultural interests shift. Still, his fans remain diligent. Their devotion and loyalty has pegged him as the greatest private investigator of all time, and now that his television avatar has returned for the second season of “Elementary,” Sherlock reunites with an old foe.

In next week’s episode, titled “Poison Pen,” Sherlock will come face to face with the first killer to ever cross his path. In a brand new promo, he explains to Joan that the said killer, Abagail Spencer, gave him a gift at the age of 15 when she offered him “a view inside a mind capable of murder.” Intriguing. The promo is more of a mystery than the case at hand. Take a look for yourself over at TVLine.

In last night’s episode, Sherlock and Joan discover a murder that’s connected to a dangerous man who’s holding onto classified information. And as a shocking surprise, Sherlock is almost outsmarted.

At the end of the episode, we see Sherlock reading a letter from Moriarty, which opens up a tidal wave of emotions for the private investigator. Although the episode failed to move the story along, it established several key plots that will likely develop as the season goes on.

“Elementary” airs Thursday nights at 10 p.m. on CBS.
