Oscar 2014 Best Foreign Film Predictions: 76 Films Submitted for Consideration

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that 76 Films will compete for Foreign Film.

Among the high profile submissions are Asghar Farhadi's "The Past," which won the Best Actress award at Cannes, and Italy's "The Great Beauty." Saudi Arabia's popular submission "Wadjda" made history by becoming the first ever Academy Award film submission from the country.

Another popular choice was Denmark's "The Hunt," which also won numerous accolades and which recently had a successful theatrical run. Chile's "Gloria" has been very popular throughout the festival circuit and recently premiered to incredible reception at the New York Film Festival.

Hong Kong's "The Grandmaster" has a strong chance especially with the Weinstein Company distributing, while Japan's "The Great Passage" has proved to be one of the most controversial choices. Japan chose that film over the Cannes winner "Like Father Like Son."

Berlin's Golden Bear winner "Child's Pose" is Romania's choice, while Canada chose "Gabrielle" in hopes of being nominated four years in a row.

Tribeca Film Festival winner "The Broken Circle Breakdown" seems like an unlikely choice, but with a 2013 release the film could prove to be a surprise.

Other popular choices include Austria's "The Wall," Argentina's "Wakolda," Germany's "Two Lives" and Netherland's "Borgman."

Among the missing contenders is "Blue is the Warmest Color." The film was not eligible because it did not come out before Sept. 30 in France. Instead France submitted "Renoir," which split the critics.

The foreign film category has previously been won by "Amour," "A Separation," "The Counterfeiter," "The Secret in Their Eyes" and "Departures."

The Academy will pick nine finalists in January before short listing the final five films on Jan. 16.
