It’s pumpkin season. Pumpkin lattes, pumpkin pies, pumpkin patches, and most importantly, carved pumpkins now consume our daily lives. Halloween lurks around the corner. Our insatiable appetite for horror and fear settles into the bottom caverns of our souls. Our sweet toothes prepare for the sugary overload that leave dentists reeling. It’s a wonderful time of year. One of the few that caters to indulgence. And to cast an even eerier tone over the month of all things evil, “American Horror Story” will be returning for its third season, titled “Coven.”

FX has remained tight lipped on the upcoming season, but a brand new interview with producers Ryan Murphy, Tim Minear and Brad Falchuk sheds light on an otherwise dark and twisted second season, fueling the excitement for the approaching third.

For one, Jessica Lange got rather tired of caning in “Asylum,” and is pleased that the producers have her back, sort of. “I’m always shocked that [actors] call us up and say, ‘I have to do what?’ The only note I ever got from an actor was Jessica Lange,” said Murphy during the interview with Entertainment Weekly. “There was a day she was looking at bare asses for like 12 hours. She’s like, ‘I can’t do it anymore, I did it enough…” I even gave her the option: what if we do a different kind of caning? With, like, horse-hair canes.” At least Lange has options, right?

But they have to cater to their star actress. Lange has been helpful not only in attracting fans with her acting, but helping producers at the writing table as well. “‘The Name Game’ happened because Jessica Lange played a lounge singer turned nun, and around episode eight, after she had been put into solitary and locked up, and was covered in vomit and everything else, she said, ‘Remember when I used to sing? Can’t I just have one song, can’t I have a moment?’ Murphy said. “I had always loved that song since I was a kid, so I brought it in and played it, and we figured out a way to make it. It worked because that character was in the middle of a psychotic break.”

While fans look back at the defining moments of Season 2, they prepare for its return in a whole new capacity, one that promises to be as terrifying as the last. “American Horror Story: Coven” premieres on FX this Wednesday, October 9.
